Individual Compulsory Gear

The following items are compulsory and must be taken to the gear check by each competitor.

  1. Base Layer for Torso – we recommend a technical t-shirt made of quick-drying fabric such as Icebreaker Superfine 150 or polypropylene. We do not recommend cotton fabrics.
  2. Thermal Layers for Torso & Legs – We recommend a long sleeved top made from a warm quick-drying fabric such as Icebreaker Superfine 200 or polypropylene. We do not recommend cotton fabrics.
  3. Gortex Jacket & Waterproof Trousers – your jacket must be waterproof, windproof & breathable – a gortex jacket, or it’s equivalent. Jackets do not need to be seam sealed, although it will be more effective if it is. You must also carry waterproof trousers.
  4. Lightweight Crampons – something for extra traction if conditions gets slippery or icy
  5. Warm Hat & Gloves – wool, polypropylene or merino such as Icebreaker
  6. Survival Bag or Bivvy Bag – to help keep you warm if you are injured or benighted; a survival blanket only is not sufficient.

  9. Food* - you must carry enough food for 24 hours

Recommended Gear

  • We recommend that you keep any personal medications you may need with you (e.g. prescription drugs)
  • We recommend electrolyte replacement powder for cramps (e.g. Gastrolyte), pain relief medication for headaches (e.g. Panadol), anti-inflammatories (e.g. Neurofen) and anti-histamines (e.g. Telfast)
  • Other teams also found the following items useful:
  • Gaiters, gloves and anti-histamines for extra protection against spiky grasses and bushes
  • One collapsible hiking pole per person for ascents and descents, especially if have bad knees/ankles
  • Vaseline/Chafe Ease for hot spots/chafing
  • Two pairs of socks, duct tape or blister repair kits for blisters
  • Trimmed toe nails for added comfort on descent

Compulsory Maps

Teams are required to carry NZ Topo50 maps CB11 Arrowtown and CB12 Cardrona as the latitude, longitude and grid coordinates are different from those used on the previous NZMS260 maps. As the track is only 18‐months old the first half of the Motatapu Track isn’t yet shown on the NZ Topo50 Map but route finding is not difficult (see Route Finding below). However, if the weather conditions close in you may need to navigate by map and compass . Please also refer to Bad Weather & Exit Routes below. We also recommend reading the DOC Motatapu Track brochure ‐ it contains lots of useful information.

GPS Coordinates

Motatapu Event Staff and Emergency Services will be using NZGD2000, the datum used by Topo50 to determine latitudes and longitudes. For those using current GPS systems, you can change the settings on your GPS receiver to NZGD2000. If your GPS does not support NZGD2000, it will still be able to support Topo50. You can simply set your GPS receiver to the default datum setting of WGS84 which, for all practical purposes, WGS84 is the same as NZGD2000. This means that latitudes and longitudes from your GPS receiver will be compatible with those shown on Topo50 maps. For further details, see http://www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo‐maps/topo50/gps/index.aspx.

 Foot Grips/Crampons

Foot grips/instep crampons are compulsory for the R&R Sport Adventure Run. Some people may think we are being over the top with this requirement – it’s merely a precaution due to the remote nature of the race and the fact that we can have freezing temperatures at this hour of the morning. We do not require you to carry full mountaineering crampons – examples of the type of light weight item we require are as follows and are available in New Zealand gear stores. If the weather is predicted to be fine the Event Director may advise you during the race briefing that you do not need to carry them. If so, you are welcome to leave them in the gear trailer that will be provided.
