PREPARING

It's completely up to you how much time and energy you devote towards preparing for the Motatapu but like most things, the more you prepare, the more you'll enjoy it! The things you'll need to think about before the race takes place are:

  • Personal preparation (eg. fitness & nutrition)
  • Event Transport & Accommodation (often sells out)
  • Compulsory Bike & Gear Checks (Feb 16 - Mar 8)
  • Weather Conditions (layers, reserve day plans etc)

For further details on each of these, read on!

Training Advice

Information regarding general training and stretching advice will be made available to you after entering the event through your Iconic Profile. You may also like to consider a personalised training schedule as everyone's goals are very different. The maximum time you have to complete the MTB event is determined by the cut off time of 3pm at Aid Station 2. However, why not aim to do better than the maximum? Setting yourself a goal to finish the event within a certain time is a very positive way to approach the event. Even if you don’t make that time, at least you can say you gave it your best shot! After all, the better that you can prepare, the more you'll enjoy it! Information regarding general training and stretching advice will be available in due course. You may also like to consider a personalised training schedule as everyone's goals are very different.

Please be aware that it is not possible to train on the Motatapu Mountain Bike course in advance due to it being private property.

MTB Bike & Gear Checks

MTB Bike & Gear Checks are compulsory for all Mountain Bike competitors. They can only be completed between February 16 - March 8, 2012 at an official Motatapu store. Please note that those outside of the main city centres may have to go to two stores in order to complete this process. To read about the compulsory checks in more detail click here.

Reserve Day

The weather is very unpredictable in the high country and a front can blow in and out of the mountains in less than 12 hours. If severe weather is forecast for the scheduled Saturday event day, the event will be postponed to the Sunday (reserve day) and the event timing will remain the same regardless of the date. If so, this will be notified on the Motatapu website, Facebook and More FM radio announcements. Please plan appropriately in case of a possible postponement. If the reserve day cannot be used the event will be cancelled and there will be no refunds. Follow the links to view the current 10-day forecast for Queenstown and Wanaka.
